The Bison Ridge Story

After more than 40 years of serving our community, the Howard Wilson family divided Howie’s Enterprises into separate companies. As the family entered this new chapter they chose to carry forward the recycling division and wanted the new name to reflect both our roots and our vision for the future.

Over the years, a talented sculptor visited our recycling center many times, gathering pieces of iron and metal that others might see as scrap. Through creativity and craftsmanship, he transformed those recycled materials into lasting works of art — a beautiful reminder of what recycling truly is.

One of his most meaningful creations was inspired by our owner’s wife, who has always admired the bison — the majestic, iconic symbol of strength on the Kansas prairie. She dreamed of having a real bison on their farm, but instead, the sculptor created something even more enduring: an iron bison, built from reclaimed metal, placed proudly on a ridge overlooking the entry drive of their home.

For years now, that bison has stood as a welcoming figure — a symbol of resilience, tradition, and stewardship.

In Kansas, the bison represents perseverance through harsh winters and blazing summers. It is also a powerful connection to the Flint Hills, where bison once roamed freely for centuries. That history reminds us that protecting our land, resources, and environment is not optional — it is our duty.

For decades, we have proudly served Manhattan as a hub for responsible waste diversion, helping our community recycle, reuse, and protect the place we call home.

Our new name honors that legacy — and our commitment to carry it forward for generations to come.
